:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jeffery A Bowen -- A must read... : Fun and factual...grat combination!!!! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alexander Holcomb -- Fun! : Great book! Informative for people who want to be informed and entertaining for people who want to be entertained! My favorite sections were the last chapter and the epilogue. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ann F. -- Entertaining and informative : While this book is unfortunately limited to Europe and North America, it is still a thorough and entertainingly written overview of what celebrity means and what it has meant in the past. It profiles both celebrities and public response to them, including fanaticism and rejoicing in their downfalls. Recommended for anybody with an interest in popular history or in the history of celebrity. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from LostInTheWoods -- Dead good : I came to this book through listening to the brilliant ‘You’re Dead to Me’ podcast. As a rule, I tend to find non-fiction hard-going - my flitting brain needs plot! I was also a bit hesitant as I wasn’t really all that immediately drawn to the subject matter... Celebrity culture seemed to me a slight and shallow subject (I was clearly wrong!). However, Jenner breathes life into all the people he talks about with such vivid enthusiasm and cracks through telling their stories with such humour and delight that he held me captivated. I love the way he writes and he definitely managed to keep my wandering brain on course. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 8, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Zotwot -- Fascinating and Fun History of Celebrity : A really interesting book about the history of celebrity from public historian Greg Jenner. It shares loads of interesting stories of historical celebrities, some funny, some heart-breaking but all fascinating. It's written thematically so there are chapters on things like image, publicity and fandom and the book also seeks to identify what a celebrity actually is. Like any good history book should, every piece of information here referenced. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from LJBentley -- Fascinating : The world of celebrity is strange. It is like we choose random people and celebrate their arbitrary quality because society tells us to whether it be Kim Kardashian’s bottom or David Beckham’s left foot. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mrs S -- You don’t need to live history to live this book : I have followed Greg Jenner’s career since discovering him when watching Horrible Histories with my daughter (and rewatching it since). He is clearly a man of high intelligence, and also a marvellous sense of humour which pervades this excellent book. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 1, 2020 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from DV -- Contents interesting but style too slangy, gave up on it. : Celebrity, fame, infamy, notoriety...Jenner tries to untangle the various ways people find themselves celebrities ..or make themselves so. Some fascinating examples form ancient times but the culture of Celebrity really appeared in the 1700s and took off in the 20th century. Jenner seems widely read in the subject and if it wasn't for the style of his writing it would have been entertaining and worth recommending. But oh, the style! It is written in the chatty English of a tabloid columnist, peppered with 21st century slang and characters too, (despite his claim to cut off at 1950). Just one example: he can't help saying `sod all' instead of `nothing'. and in 10 years it would require a footnote on almost every (Kindle) page to translate some of the terms. It reminds me of the stranger in the pub saying `an' another thing...' as he looks past your ear. Such a pity. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2020 )
